Phoenix Introspection

love of my life
wherever you are
I’m lost, and I’m not safe

I do not know
which way to go
to rescue myself from myself

here in the cage
I made of my broken wings
nursing my heart in the ashes

my introspection
every reflection
all of the thousand things
I couldn’t say
but what does it matter to you, anyway?

when I was pure
or before I knew
the depth of shame and the pain of knowing
I walked the stage
as unafraid
as any you could show me

but that was before
and what have I become
you lay down with monsters
you lose yourself
and wake up a stranger
no words and no songs
and no way to tell

I’m lost and I’m not safe
I’m lost and I’m not sure
if the way’s open to your arms
when I can’t even look you in the eyes
set aside my fear and my insecurities
and this arrogant pride that is killing me
the wisest words, and the auguries
cannot speak for my heart
cannot silence me

do I always want what I cannot have?
do I only hold on when I know you’ll slip away?

do I have it in me to fly?
do I still have the strength to try?
